Silvia Allred - example of love

One of the main reasons I love the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is because of the people it helps produce. I find examples of them often.

I enjoy listening to conversations, a program on the "mormon channel" in which different members of the church, often general authorities (high ranking church officials) are interviewed. Two stories in particular stick out to me that I learned from this program. One is about Steven Snow. He and his wife had just finished their new home one Saturday after serving 3 years as mission presidents in CA. It was late March; they had 3 sons who would be married over the next several months. The next Monday, they received a call from President Hinckley and were asked to move to South Africa in August and be a member of the First Quorum of the 70. Their last son was getting married in August, and they'd leave just after that.

When I consider how much they probably wanted to be around to support their sons during these early months and years of marriage, I am incredibly touched by their willingness to leave that behind and serve in the Church for the Lord. I am amazed that the church produces such people as them.

Silvia Allred is another great example. She is now the 2nd Counselor in the R.S. general presidency. When she was called, she and her husband were serving as presidents of the Dominican Republic MTC. She notes in her interview that when she was called and sitting on the stand, she was very sad. She looked out at her husband and knew that he had given up his mission for her calling, and she knew how much he loved the missionaries and his mission.

That is love; there's only 9 women general authorities in the church, and instead of thinking about how great it was or what a blessing it was to be one of them, she thought about how her husband wasn't serving as much as he would have liked because of her calling. I am so impressed by that. I want to be like her.
