Bound by awful chains of sin - inability to stay spiritual; addiction to unwise actions

Lehi the prophet told his sons that they were grasped by the chains of sin, and he wanted them to escape. Here's one verse describing this from Lehi's last great discourse in the Book of Mormon:

2 Nephi 1 13 O that ye would awake; awake from a deep asleep, yea, even from the sleep of bhell, and shake off the awful cchains by which ye are bound, which are the chains which bind the children of men, that they are carried away captive down to the eternal dgulf of misery and woe.

They were bound by the chains of sin. That's obvious from how many great experiences and yet poor choices they made. They forgot spiritual things so quickly.

Consider this other group of people that were bound by the chains of sin, and it appears addicted to their power/notoriety;

John 12:9 Much people of the Jews therefore knew that he was there: and they came not for Jesus’ sake only, but that they might see Lazarus also, whom he had raised from the dead.

10 ¶But the chief priests consulted that they might put Lazarus also to death;

11 Because that by reason of him many of the Jews went away, and believed on Jesus.

I am amazed by how far off this group of people were. Presumably, the chief priests were at one time good and great people. But, they loved power more than anything else. We must beware of loving things more than God as we too may find ourselves one day committing sins that we never would have dreamed of. I imagine that in the day those men think about what they were doing, that they wanted to kill a man who was raised from the dead, they will cower in horror at what they had become.
