Teaching Reasons why Commandments Exist

I was reading Jarom and came across a fantastic verse about teaching. Jarom explains that the people were taught the reasons for which the commandments were put in place so that they understood what they were doing:

11 Wherefore, the prophets, and the priests, and the ateachers, did labor diligently, exhorting with all long-suffering the people tobdiligence; teaching the claw of Moses, and the intent for which it was given; persuading them to dlook forward unto the Messiah, and believe in him to come eas though he already was. And after this manner did they teach them.

Sometimes we teach the rules but don't understand people why they were given and how they bless us. It's important to do both, teach people the "laws" and the "intent" for which they were given. That way, it's much more likely that they will keep following the laws.

It reminds me of a good kid (about 19 years old) we taught in Guatemala. He went to the Catholic church with his family and was a very good guy. He said that at the Catholic church he learned to pray, but at the Church of Jesus Christ of LDS he learned why to pray. The same thing with keeping the Sabbath Day Holy and other commandments.

It's our great advantage and duty to teach the why as best as we can.

Have a great day.
