As an example, we would think that it's absolutely vital that a missionary goes to the right place so he can find those prepared for the gospel at that time. There are instances where one specific place is probably where a missionary needs to be, but it's probably also true that there are people prepared for the gospel everywhere.
Consider this advice from the Lord to one companionship in D.C. 80:
3Wherefore, go ye and preach my gospel, whether to the north or to the south, to the east or to the west, it mattereth not, for ye cannot go amiss.
I am a huge fan of this verse. I would venture to say that many times it's okay to go anywhere, as long as we're going there with the right purposes. Everything will turn out just fine. In this instance the missionary companionship could teach the gospel wherever they wanted because they couldn't go amiss.
